Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Nicolo Barella, but will only move for the Cagliari midfielder in the summer.
Chelsea are in talks with Cagliari and expect to complete the transfer of Barella, or Zenit Saint Petersburg star Leandro Paredes, this week.
Cagliari are demanding a fee in the region of £45million for the 21-year-old, but Chelsea are hoping to negotiate that asking price down.
Gianluca Di Marzio.com claims Arsenal are in the race to sign Barella alongside Napoli and Chelsea.
But while Napoli and the Blues are prepared to do business in January, Arsenal must wait until the summer to strike.
Arsenal have almost no transfer funds available this month and cannot even meet Barcelona’s £20million asking price for Denis Suarez.
The Gunners have been trying to bring Suarez to the Emirates on a loan deal.
Maurizio Sarri is the man pushing for Chelsea to sign Barella as Blues coach sees the Italian as the perfect replacement for Cesc Fabregas.
Monaco are waiting to confirm the signing of Fabregas, but cannot do so until Chelsea secure a replacement.
While Sarri believes Barella is ready for the Premier League, Chelsea’s board are not so convinced.
Reports claim Chelsea’s hierarchy think Paredes might be a better option, as the 24-year-old has more experience.
